Why does the molasses jug bulge?

Our sugarcane molasses is comprised of naturally occurring elements, such as carbohydrates, water, protein, salts, and other essential vitamins and minerals. When exposed to warm temperatures these elements may react with each other and release carbon dioxide thus increasing internal pressure causing the molasses container to bulge slightly. Despite this reaction, your bottle of molasses is both edible and safe to enjoy. Once opened, we recommend storing in a cool location to avoid future container bulging.
