Heat oil in heavy-bottom medium saucepan over medium heat.
Add chopped onions and sauté until slightly brown.
Add ginger and sauté 1 to 2 minutes.
Add pears and cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
Add remaining ingredients, cover and simmer until pears are tender and mixture thickens, about 30 minutes.
Season with salt and pepper.
Serve at room temperature.
Chutney works well as a condiment for roasted duck, ham, pork or chicken.
